Importance of calcium to the regulation of polymorphism in Wangiella (Exophiala) dermatitidis.

Critical steps implicated in the polymorphism of Wangiella dermatitidis were found to be sensitive to calcium ion availability. When grown in a defined, synthetic medium under various pH and temperature conditions, two thresholds of calcium ion concentrations were identified: a lower concentration favouring non-polarized growth leading to multicellular form development and a higher concentratio...

Thermotolerance of Wangiella dermatitidis.

A variety of diagnostic tests used by many laboratories to identify isolates of Wangiella dermatitidis (= Fonsecaea dermatitidis) were evaluated. Thirteeen isolates of W. dermatitidis were studied with respect to their ability to grow at 25, 37, 40, 45, and 50 degrees C, colonial and micromorphology, gelatin liquefaction, and hydrolysis of casein, xanthine, hypoxanthine, and tyrosine. All 13 is...

Intravenous catheter-associated fungemia due to Candida rugosa.

We report a case of intravenous catheter-associated fungemia caused by Candida rugosa; this is the first report of such an infection in a human. Multiple cultures of blood taken over a 24-h period and of the intravenous catheter tip were positive for this unusual isolate. The patient was treated with intravenous amphotericin B and made an uneventful recovery. Intravenous cannulae and other intr...

Isolation of Exophiala (Wangiella) dermatitidis in a case of otitis externa.

opportunistic pathogens. We believe that C. pseudodiphtheriticum was acting as a primary pathogen in our case as it was isolated in pure growth from several samples and was seen on gram-stained histological sections invading the dermis. The skin lesions responded well to appropriate antibiotic therapy. The organism may have been inoculated into the skin by the pecking action of the chickens. C....

Exophiala (Wangiella) dermatitidis Prosthetic Aortic Valve Endocarditis and Prosthetic Graft Infection in an Immune Competent Patient

Exophiala (Wangiella) dermatitidis is an emerging dematiaceous fungus associated with high mortality rates and is a rare cause of endocarditis. We describe the first case of E. dermatitidis endocarditis of a prosthetic aortic valve and aortic graft in an immune competent patient with no clear risk factors of hematological acquisition.
